The value of interior defensive linemen has been skyrocketing recently. The league is increasingly recognizing that pressure up the middle can be as, if not more, impactful than pressure from the edge. As teams seek to avoid the exorbitant costs of signing established veterans in free agency, they are turning to younger talents to fill the gap.
Quinnen Williams epitomizes this shift. Securing him with a contract extension was a prudent move. Historically, we’ve relied on hired guns to complement him at the other starting defensive tackle position and provide depth. However, given the ongoing inflation in the prices of interior defensive linemen, it makes financial sense to cultivate cheaper talent to develop alongside Quinnen.

Bringing your daily links to the NFL’s New York Jets Good morning, Gang Green Nation. I hope you’re all having a great start to the day. Tomorrow is the official start of the NFL draft, and I don’t know about you, but I’m incredibly excited. The New York Jets find themselves in a good position, sitting at tenth in the draft. They have the potential to take an elite playmaker, an elite offensive lineman, or potentially trade down to secure more picks. The Jets are essentially in a win-win situation, where the only way they could potentially ‘lose’ in the eyes of the fans is if the team drafts another defensive player - especially if it’s an Edge. However, even if that were to happen, there’s a lot of incredible players to like at those positions as well. After spending months tracking players myself, I’m just excited to see where these players will start their NFL careers - and who will be doing so in Green and White. With that, here are Collapse

Will the Jets target a wide receiver to trade up in the draft? The New York Jets do not have a second round pick in the upcoming draft, which has fueled speculation that they could want to move down in the draft in exchange for additional picks. However, the Jets could also use another blue-chip player (as could every team in the league), which could give them reason to move up rather than back.
This week, general manager Joe Douglas spoke about the possibility, confirming that it is under consideration to some degree.
Joe Douglas says they are having conversations this week about who the players are in the Draft that would make them think about trading up.— Brian Costello (@BrianCoz) April 19, 2024
From my perspective, this could make sense. Like I said before, every team could use another blue-chip player. If the Jets think a trade up (at a reasonable price) allows them to do that, and it can’t be done at 10, then Collapse

Bringing your daily links to the NFL’s New York Jets Good morning, Gang Green Nation. I hope you’re all having a great start to the day. It turns out that Joe Douglas and the New York Jets were able to do the unthinkable. Yesterday the team managed to trade quarterback Zach Wilson to the Denver Broncos for a pick swap, with the Jets receiving a 6th-round pick in return for Wilson and a 7th-round selection. The Jets also agreed to pay for half of Wilson’s salary for this season.
To be honest, I never thought a team would make a trade to receive Zach Wilson given his historically bad performances since he was drafted by New York. With that said, I do believe there was some kind of ‘F You’ move involved by head coach of the Broncos, Sean Payton. While Zach Wilson won’t likely start any meaningful games for Denver, one can’t help but think that Payton is trying to prove he can ‘fix’ Wilson to stick it to Nathaniel Hackett. 2 DAYS AGO - Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports
Should the Jets be interested in Jackson Powers-Johnson? By my assessment the New York Jets have done a tremendous job in terms of improving the upside of the offensive line this season. Most notably, they added offensive tackle Tyron Smith who simply might be the best tackle in the league when healthy. Beyond that, they added some decent starters in guard John Simpson and tackle Morgan Moses. Beyond those additions, they have reason to expect center Joe Tippman and offensive line Swiss army knife Alijah Vera-Tucker to be improved based on more experience (and hopefully health).
However, there is always room to improve an offensive line. Whomever your projected worst lineman is should always be in danger of losing his job to a better option. The offensive line is just too important to settle for anything less than the absolute best you can do (within budget).
To that end, the Jets have been regularly linked to offensive tackles in the upcoming Collapse

Bringing your daily links to the NFL’s New York Jets Good morning, Gang Green Nation. I hope you’re all having a great start to the day. Shout out to Mr. Wells for holding down the fort over the weekend as usual. The New York Jets have been favored to draft Georgia tight end Brock Bowers for the past couple of weeks - this coming after the team was favorited to select an offensive lineman with their first pick. I’ve talked about this previously on Flight Connections, but I truly believe the Jets would be better off skipping on Brock Bowers and getting an offensive lineman instead. That is, unless Joe Douglas is able to make a trade in which the Jets move back, add another pick in this year’s, or next year’s draft, and then select Bowers later in the first round. It’s not that I don’t like Brock Bowers, it’s that this team is still very far away from making luxury picks like this. We’ll see what Douglas and company intend Collapse

The Jets have Garrett Wilson and a whole lot of question marks at wide receiver Despite signing Mike Williams in free agency, wide receiver is still considered one of the Jets’ main needs heading into the 2024 draft.
The New York Jets entered the offseason with a receiving corps that was sorely lacking in established talent other than number one receiver Garrett Wilson.
New York didn’t draft a receiver last year and, in retrospect, perhaps they should have. However, at the time, there was plenty of optimism about the strength of the wide receiver unit, even though they had traded Elijah Moore a few weeks beforehand.
Aside from Wilson, the Jets had Corey Davis and Denzel Mims on the roster and had signed Mecole Hardman and Allen Lazard in free agency. They also officially added Randall Cobb a week after the draft, although it was widely regarded as a foregone conclusion that he’d be added at some point.

Can the Jets get a healthy season out of their offensive line? There’s no question that the New York Jets had a rough time with injuries on their offensive line in 2023 and that this had a material impact on their performance.
Everyone was in agreement that the Jets needed to retool their offensive line, and they’ve already done that. They’re also expected to continue this process and further improve their depth during the upcoming draft.
However, will this approach be doomed to failure if the Jets have a similar sequence of bad injury luck in 2024? Conversely, had they remained healthy throughout the 2023 season, would the offensive line performance have been good enough that it wasn’t regarded as such a big priority after all? Also, how could any other team cope if forced to deal with the same kind of injuries?
Let’s begin there, because one factor that was apparent throughout the postseason was that the teams with the best win-loss records in the Collapse

With several late picks the Jets may target upgrading their special teams Brant Boyer is returning for his ninth season as the New York Jets special teams coordinator. However, despite our warnings, the Jets have let a few key special teams contributors leave, so it will be necessary to find some new people to fill key roles.
In some cases, they may have players already on the roster who they will be hoping can step up.
The most significant loss is Justin Hardee, but the team is obviously high on Irv Charles as a primary gunner (despite the fact the Jets’ coverage numbers were significantly worse when Hardee was injured last year). Hardee was also a special teams captain who made contributions as a blocker and on kickoff coverage units, though, so Charles alone might not be enough to replace his contributions.
The team opted to bring back Ashtyn Davis, although it seems likely they might increase his role on defense and Collapse

The interior offensive line group may boast depth, yet it’s the scarcity of top-tier talent that sets them apart. Conversely, the offensive tackle cohort is brimming with such talent, making it likely that we’ll witness a record number of them drafted in the first round this year. It’s a class heavily weighted towards its upper echelon.
By the time the third round kicks off, the cream of the crop might have already been plucked. Securing a tackle with immediate starting potential demands a pick within the top 64 selections. The urgency for acquiring a tackle stems from various factors, notably the precariousness of player health, particularly at the crucial LT position. Placing all our hopes on one player like Carter Warren is a risky gamble I’m not inclined to take.
Moreover, our roster for next year is scantily populated with starters under contract. Relying on the slim chance of securing a player akin to Tyron Smith Collapse

For those seeking to cultivate a quarterback talent beyond the first round, there exists a select group with the potential to be truly special. Presently, we have Rodgers, Tyrod, and Zach under contract, providing a stable foundation. The assurance of solidified QB positions for this year is indeed a relief.
However, it’s imperative to cast our gaze towards the future. The Aaron Rodgers rollercoaster won’t last indefinitely, and we must capitalize on his expertise while simultaneously grooming our next generation. Establishing a clear succession plan for the QB position is essential for retaining our star players, instilling Collapse

Tip Reiman is a tough and hard working tight end prospect The New York Jets would be wise to draft a tight end in the 2024 NFL draft, but it might not be the one you have been hearing about. The talk of Brock Bowers as a first round pick gives me shivers, since the Jets have serious needs in many spots and the Jets can find a better prospect later in the draft.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Bowers is a fine player, but he really isn’t a tight end in the traditional sense. He is more of a move tight end. He’s a big receiver who gives you little blocking in the run game. Bowers is fast. He ran 4.53/40 at his pro day at 243 lbs, which is good. Of course, a pro day isn’t like the electronic timing at the NFL combine. They tend to be a little charitable with the timing on your home turf. Some of the scouts present might not have had such a generous timing.

Time to delve into the running backs, and the 2024 class presents a unique landscape. There’s no standout top-tier talent demanding a high pick; in fact, I haven’t even graded any of these prospects as second-rounders. However, that doesn’t mean there’s no value to be found in this class.
The running back position is often undervalued in today’s NFL. With the trend of drafting, utilizing, and then cycling through backs without committing to second contracts unless they’re truly elite, finding value becomes paramount.
For the Jets, the focus is on securing a prospect who can offer both depth and versatility. While we have Hall, the depth chart behind him is filled with unproven talent. We need someone who can step in and contribute immediately while also complementing Hall’s skill set to avoid any significant drop-off in performance. The tight end position has emerged as one of the most hotly debated topics among Jets fans this draft cycle, albeit primarily focusing on one standout prospect. However, it’s imperative to assess the entire group, given the array of promising talents, each offering unique skill sets, with some excelling in specific areas.
Presently, our options seem limited to Conklin and Ruckert. While there are potential talents waiting in the wings, pinning our hopes on them seems imprudent. Conklin boasts reliability, but Ruckert’s performance has been marred by inconsistency, underscoring the need for a substantial upgrade across the position.
Thankfully, this year’s talent pool appears robust, spanning from the early rounds to the mid-draft selections. Whether you covet yards after catch specialists, imposing blockers for the trenches, or well-rounded athletes, this draft class offers a diverse range of options to suit various team Collapse

Roman Wilson is fast, quick and smart, with great hands Roman Wilson is a clutch, tough, crafty and smart receiver, with great hands and speed to burn. He is a smart kid who was an academic All-Big 10 scholar. He has near elite speed that he combines with excellent acceleration to get himself free of coverage. He was severely under-used in Michigan’s pound the rock offensive scheme.
One quarter of Wilson’s receptions in 2023 went for touchdowns. In Michigan’s championship season he caught half of the team’s touchdown receptions even though he only had 18.6% of the team’s total receptions. He did this despite not being a “go” route running outside receiver, as he ran 69% of his snaps from the slot. He has elite hands. Wilson caught 48 of 49 catchable passes in 2023, with many being leaping grabs or taking a jarring blow at the catch. He is a nuanced route runner who will “lean” as he makes cuts to gain more separation from his coverage.

Which defensive tackles might be a good fit for the Jets?
